The Greenhouse effect:

Global warming is the increase in global temperatures since the mid-20th Century.
It is caused by the release of Carbon dioxide. This is released from the burning of fossil fuels.
These come from:

· Power stations
· Cars
· Factories

It is also caused by the release of methane from agriculture (cattle farming)

Acid rain:
All rain is naturally acidic due to a reaction between water and carbon dioxide. This forms carbonic acid. This has a pH of 5.6.
Factories and cars release sulphur dioxide and nitric oxide into the atmosphere. This reacts with water and forms either sulphuric acid or nitric acid. This then falls a rain causing:

· Damage to trees and plants
· Decrease in the pH of lakes killing fish
· Damage to limestone buildings – statues lose their detail
